Application Process

Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your interest in the American Culture Program at the University of Michigan. Please note that the American Culture Program only accepts applications for fall admissions. To receive full consideration for fall admissions, your application and all required documents must be received by December 1.

To assist you in this process, please review the following list carefully and submit your documents to:

The Rackham Graduate School

  • Online Application Form
  • Online Personal Statement
  • Online Statement of Purpose
  • Online Resume or Curriculum Vita
  • Online Three Letters of Recommendation and Completed Evaluation Forms
  • Online Expository Writing Sample (15 page limit)

    • This writing need not be on the subject of your proposed study but will ideally demonstrate strength in the interdisciplinary primary research methods used in American Studies and/or Ethnic Studies.  If you choose to submit a writing sample from another field or from within a single discipline (such as History or English) please use your statement of proposed research to comment on the way you expect your methodology to change in future scholarship.

  • One Set of Official Transcripts - Undergraduate and Graduate
  • Application Fee
  • Official GRE Scores

The American Culture Program (only if not included online)

  • Resume or Curriculum Vita
  • Personal Statement and Statement of Purpose
  • Three Letters of Recommendation and Completed Evaluation Forms
  • Expository Writing Sample (15 page limit)
    • Please see description above
  • One Set of Official Transcripts - Undergraduate and Graduate

In the Statement of Purpose, please identify 3 faculty members that you are interested in working with in the American Culture Program. Please note that a listing of faculty research/interests are listed on our website and that both Core Faculty and Faculty Associates serve as Primary Advisors and Dissertation Chairs for the graduate students in our American Culture program.

After the December 1 deadline, the Admissions Committee will only review completed applications. By the last week of March, all applicants will receive written notification of our final decisions for fall admissions. If you are applying to more than one department or program at the University of Michigan, you must complete a separate graduate application for each department/program.

We look forward to receiving your graduate application to our American Culture Program. If you have any questions about the application process, please feel free to contact me by phone (734-647-9533) or e-mail (marlenem@umich.edu).

Sincerely,

Marlene Moore
