How, when, and where are tests scheduled?

A student who is required to take the test should contact the graduate secretary in the department where he or she wants to be a GSI. The secretary of the department contacts Barry Regan, reganb@umich.edu, at ELI-UM to schedule the test. If a student is enrolled in an ELI-UM language course, the test should not be scheduled until the last week of the course. Note that this only applies to speaking or oral communication skills courses; if a student is enrolled in a writing course, the student does not have to wait until the end of the course in order to take the OET.

Students who are enrolled in the LS&A ELI/CRLT course are tested at the end of the course. The ELI notifies the department of those students who are waived from the GSI OET based on linguistic performance during the course and of those students who need to take the GSI OET. The department arranges test dates and times with the ELI and notifies students of the testing schedule.

The GSI Oral English Tests are conducted at the English Language Institute 500 East Washington between State Street and Division Street. (If the College of Engineering schedules 3 or more consecutive tests, the ELI will conduct these tests on North Campus.)

For questions about GSI test scheduling, India Plough, indiac@umich.edu, 734.615.9627, the GSI OET program director.
