Who should not take the Korean Placement Test?

If you have no prior knowledge of Korean and want to take Korean at the University of Michigan (UM), please do not take the placement test. Instead, you should enroll in Asianlan135 or Asianlan 137. (Note: Asianlan 137 is offered during summer only and not on a regular basis. Please contact University of Michigan Summer Language Institute (um.sli@umich.edu) or Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (Tel: 734-764-8286) for summer courses.

Who should take the Korean Language Placement Test?

  • Students who are exposed to Korean either informally at home or formally at any institution other than UM and would like to take Korean at UM.
  • Students who are returning from a Korean study abroad program and would like to continue their language classes. Study abroad students need to take the placement test to see how their abroad language acquisition compares to UM standards.
  • Students who took Korean a year ago and want to continue Korean in a consecutive level or higher level need to take the placement test to confirm their current levels of Korean. Also, if you wish to test out of a language requirement, you should take the Korean Placement Exam.

Do I need to register for the Korean Placement Test?

Yes. You must register for the placement test online by filling out a survey form. Please take the survey at least a week before you take the placement test.

When should I take the Korean Placement Test?

When are the test results posted?
