Two Sisters: One Strong Bond Ashley and McKenzie Maynor

Ashley and Mckenzie Maynor are sisters and CSP students who are both interested in Dentistry. Ashley is a 3rd year student majoring in Brain, Behavior & Cognitive Science. She first became interested in Dentistry her Freshemen year. She entered U of M thinking she would go to medical school but once she arrived on campus she began exploring other options. She realized that Dentistry would allow her to continue her love for science yet she would be able to start her career a lot sooner. She researched career opportunities and discovered that Dentistry would give her the flexibility she desired.

Mckenzie, 2nd year student, first became interested in Dentistry her Senior year in High School. At this time big sister was off at college and she had no idea that she was also exploring the field. Mckenzie stated that she remembered going to the dentist as a child and watching children become terrified of the thought of going to the chair. She is hoping to change that and combine her love for science, math and people with Dentistry. She is undecided on an major and is currently exploring options .

Mckenzie was in the Pipeline Program Summer 2005. She stated that she was informed about the program from a friend of a friend. It was a little difficult to find information on campus about pipeline but she is happy that she put forth the effort. The application involved an essay about why you want to go into dentistry and two letters of recommendation. Mckenzie enjoyed the program and learned a lot.

Ashley has utilized her time in the summer taking sciences courses. This has helped her lighten her course load and really grasp the materials.

Ashley & McKenzie are in the Undergraduate Student National Dental Association: USNDA. This is a new student group for pre-dental students. For additional support they have utilized family, friends, and the CSP office. They are considering:The University of Michigan, The University of Southern California, and The University of Detroit Mercy as possible Dental schools.

Advice:

Ashley- If possible, get a job or work study position in the Dental School. The experiences you will have are priceless. Utilize your Academic Advisor their advice can be valuable and they can help you design a reasonable plan for the required science courses. Affiliate with CSP if you are not currently a member of the program.

Mckenzie- If you can go to Bridge. It was very rewarding and gave me the foundation to be successful; I would not trade my Bridge experiences for anything! Get to know your advisor; that personal relationship is extremely beneficial especially for recommendation letters. Build your GPA. Stay focused.
