Applications Application packets must include:

A one-page letter of application

Curriculum vitae

Student applications must include contact information for two academic references

An abstract, not to exceed three double-spaced pages, of the proposed project
The abstract should include:
a. a clear description of the topic and the purpose of the study
b. a brief description of the participants and materials to be used
c. an explanation of the procedures
d. a description of the statistical analyses
e. implication of the study to the field of second or foreign language assessment
Evaluation Criteria:
Applications will be judged according to
-
quality and clarity of abstract
-
relationship and significance of project within current scholarship in the field
-
concentration on second or foreign language assessment
-
likelihood that project will be completed in one year
-
likelihood that project will result in a publishable paper
-
evidence of ability to work independently
The Spaan Fellow Committee encourages proposals from graduate students, faculty, and other language assessment professionals. Preference will be given to studies directly applicable to English Language Institute test programs.
All Spaan Fellows must prepare a final report of their project that will be included in the annual Spaan Fellow Working Papers in Second or Foreign Language Assessment.
