The English Placement Test (EPT), is a 100-item multiple-choice test. It contains problems testing listening comprehension of short utterances (a tape recording is available), grammar in conversational contexts, selection of high frequency vocabulary to fit the context of single sentences, and reading comprehension of sentences.
The EPT is used to group students into homogeneous ability levels as they enter an intensive English course. Alternate forms of the EPT can be used for pre-testing and post-testing. The EPT is designed for optimal discrimination at the intermediate proficiency level. Raw scores cannot be converted to the scale used on the MTELP or on the MELICET-GCVR. EPT cut scores formerly used for the ELI-UM 6-level intensive ESL program are available to test purchasers, but the cut scores may need to be revised to fit other English instructional programs.
