Before registering for their first term at U-M, most nonnative speakers of English take the Academic English Evaluation (AEE). This test is administered by the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan (ELI-UM) at the request of U-M admitting units. Each admitting unit decides who must take the AEE and notifies them of this requirement. You should check your admissions letter and accompanying material to see if you are required to take the AEE. If you do not know if you must take the exam, ask your admitting unit, not ELI-UM.
The AEE is a test of academic English skills used to place students in, or exempt them from, English language courses. The AEE includes measures of writing, listening, grammar, vocabulary, reading, speaking, and pronunciation. The 2½-to-3 hour test is given over two days. You take the written portions of the AEE on one day. On a later day, you are given an appointment for a speaking test and a counseling session. In the counseling session, you get the results of your AEE and discuss with an advisor which, if any, ELI-UM academic English courses you will be required to take or might want to take.
You should take the AEE before you register for classes if possible. Shortly after you take the AEE, ELI-UM will notify your admitting unit that you have taken the test so that the unit knows you have completed that admission requirement.

You must register for the AEE in advance
If you are not able to register on the Web, register by phoning 734.764.2413, or by sending an email to aee-info@umich.edu. Include your name and whether you are a graduate student, undergraduate student, or a visitor.

On your test day, you must bring:
- your M-card or your passport
- your letter of admission
- a printed copy of your online registration (AEE Proof of Registration Form)
- pencils with #2 lead
