Who needs to take a special English test to be a GSI?

Students whose undergraduate education was at an institution in which the primary language of instruction is not English are required to take the GSI Oral English Test.

Rackham Exemptions
A student who has an undergraduate degree from a U.S. college or university, or an undergraduate degree from a college or university in which English is the exclusive language of instruction is exempt from taking the GSI Oral English Test.

ELI Waivers
Prospective GSIs who do not meet the University-wide exemption criteria may be waived from testing/training if they have language experience comparable to students with an undergraduate degree from a university in which English is the primary language of instruction. In such cases, departments should contact the ELI for a review of relevant documentation.
