The Smart Student Guide to Financial Aid *

FinAid was established in the fall of 1994 as a public service. This award-winning site has grown into the most comprehensive source of student financial aid information, advice and tools -- on or off the web.

Estimated Cost of Attendance *

The Office of Financial Aid establishes standard student budgets each year as a basis for awarding financial aid funds. These budgets reflect typical "modest but adequate" expense patterns of University of Michigan students based on research conducted by the Office of Financial Aid. While actual expenses will vary based on your lifestyle and level of enrollment, the estimated costs listed below should assist you in planning your own budget.

Residency Classification Guidelines *

Classification Guidelines have been developed to ensure that decisions about whether a student pays in-state or out-of-state tuition are fair and equitable and that applicants for admission or enrolled students who believe they are Michigan residents understand they may be required to complete an Application for Resident Classification and provide additional information to document their residency status.

The Registrar’s Office administers the University’s determination regarding each student’s residency status (will you be billed as an in-state or an out-of-state student). Their information includes how a student can file an appeal.

Residence Hall Rates *

Housing Billing and Refund Policies *

Most charges assessed by University Housing to residence hall or Northwood Community Apartment residents appear on a monthly Student Account Statement issued electronically as an eBill by the University's Office of Student Financial Operations. For all charges that appear on a Student Account Statement, payment is made directly to Student Financial Operations either by mail or at one of the University two Cashier's Offices.

Health Insurance for Students *

Why students need health insurance Health insurance is not required to receive care at UHS. Many UHS services are covered by the health service fee when a student is enrolled for classes for the current semester on the Ann Arbor campus. Students should have health insurance in order to cover medical care received outside of UHS. These are not covered by the health service fee. Fees for these services are the patient's responsibility.

Tuition Refund Plan (Insurance) *

Why buy this insurance plan? The cost of education today is a substantial investment. Students and parents may face significant financial loss if students are unable to complete a term due to illness (physical or psychological). This plan may be especially useful if students have a health condition that could compromise their ability to complete a term.
