Established in 1986, the CBCF Congressional Internship Program answered the call to help diversify our democracy by increasing the pool of talented public servants. The intensive nine-week program provides college undergraduates with a behind-the-scenes look into the democratic process. Through experiential learning in the office of a Congressional Black Caucus Member, the internship prepares interns to be decision makers in the policy making process.
Alvin Jack McChester III- CSP Sophomore
Alvin is double-concentrating in English and Political Science. He would like to share his experience with writing at the University. Alvin states: “After a year as a writer for the Spectrum, I got my first article, A closer look at rape and race at Duke University, published. I began writing full-time for the Spectrum after quitting the Michigan Daily in protest of the racist cartoons. However, it all turned out for the best because writing for an Afro-centric press has been very enjoyable.”
Jose Velez, CSP Student, Stephen M.Ross School of Business
Jose came to us from Puerto Rico in Summer Bridge 2004 and worked very hard to fulfill his pre-business courses. He is now in the last cohort going through the BBA 2-year program and will graduate in May 2008. His studies include an emphasis on Marketing and International Business. Jose is a member of the Hispanic & Latin Business Students Association, and the Entrepreneur & Venture Club. In Summer 2006, he did an internship with McCann-Erickson/Universal McCann, where he focused on media contracts with vendors as well as negotiating new and profitable deals. He is also an active member of UROP where he does marketing research on consumerism. Jose is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and also proficient in French. He has used his abilities to serve as a CSP language tutor and volunteered in the MREACH 10th grade Pilot program for the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. Congratulatons Jose and Best Wishes for your continued success!

This program allows students to work four days a week in placements like: a media organization, a federal agency, a member of Congress, or a think tank. Students enroll as a Michigan student and take Michigan credits. For more information about this program go to this website: michiganinwashington.lsa.umich.edu/MichInWash/

After graduation, Tim plans to attend Law School in the Fall of 2007. Ultimately, he is thinking about becoming a Corporate Attorney with a focus on Mergers and Acquisitions. Thank you for inspiring others to work towards their goals. Good luck in D.C.!
