Fields of Study:
Mass Media Processes; Mass Media Systems; New Media Technology
John Derby Evans Professor of Media Technology and Research Professor, Center for Political Studies, Institute for Social Research. Professor Neuman's research and teaching span two fields in communications: behavioral research on communication effects with a focus on political communication and new media technology and policy with a focus on the social and political impacts of new media diffusion. His studies Common Knowledge and Affective Intelligence combine content analysis, survey, and experimental research methods to try to better understand the dynamics of public attention to and learning from political media. The Future of the Mass Audience and The Gordian Knot analyze how the digital convergence of electronic media (including telecommunications, broadcasting, publishing and computing) leads to deregulation and economic restructuring of media institutions. Professor Neuman recently worked on information and security technology policy at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Dr. Neuman taught at the University of Pennsylvania where he directed the Information and Society Program of the Annenberg Public Policy Center. He also taught at Harvard and Yale and was one of the founding faculty of the MIT Media Laboratory.
