The ECPE consists of two different administrations. The first is an optional 30-minute preliminary test, which is offered to familiarize candidates with the format and content of the final ECPE, as well as to help candidates estimate their performance on the final ECPE.
The ECPE Preliminary Test contains 35 grammar, cloze, vocabulary, and reading items. It does not contain listening, writing, or speaking sections. The preliminary test is not used in determining final results.
The ECPE Final Examination consists of the following parts:
- a 30- to 35-minute semistructured, multistage task involving two examinees and two examiners;
- a 30-minute impromptu essay written on one of two assigned topics;
- a 30-minute, 50-item multiple-choice listening comprehension test;
- a 75-minute, 120-item multiple-choice grammar, cloze, vocabulary, and reading test.
