Physics Help Room
The Physics Help Room was created to help students who are taking Introductory Physics classes. It is located in 1416 Randall Lab. The Help Room is staffed by a combination of advanced undergraduate students, GSI's who teach the introductory labs, and faculty who teach introductory discussion sections. All Help Room staff are able to answer questions from any physics class. The Help Room is open Monday through Friday. The hours are 10 am to 6 pm Monday through Thursday and 10 am to 5 pm Friday. It closes on Wednesday at 4 pm for the department colloquium. The telephone number to the Help Room is (734) 763-7222. The Society of Physics Students
The Society of Physics Students focuses on the advancement of physics and its branches. The group sponsors regular academic and social activities for undergraduates. One of these activities is tutoring from 7-9 pm every Monday evening. They also hold biweekly meetings on Tuesday nights from 7-9 pm and invite speakers to talk about their research. Topics covered in these talks include quantum computing, current experiments, Magellan, the history of the U-M Physics Department, and more.
Another activity that takes place on a monthly basis is the SPS In-Reach program. The group invites middle school students from the Ovid-Elsie school system near East Lansing, and with the help of the Physics Department Demonstration Labs, the SPS members teach basic physics concepts. Topics of past In-Reaches include Energy, Newton's Laws, Modern Physics, waves, and others. SPS members are involved all year culminating in a physics day at Cedar Point.
This past year SPS has also toured the Ford Research Labs and the Fermi National Accelerator Lab*. This year, the members of SPS hope to expand their tutoring and In-Reach programs. For more information, please view the SPS website*.
