Testing

ELI's special interest and involvement in language testing began more than 50 years ago with the work of Robert Lado. Since the early 1950s, the ELI has been developing and administering various language tests, some designed for use within the University of Michigan and others for use nationally and internationally. Long known outside the University of Michigan by its Michigan Tests, today the Testing and Certification Division of the ELI offers a broad range of tests and services, including the Academic English Evaluation (AEE) for entering University of Michigan students; the GSI oral english test for prospective graduate student instructors; the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) for applicants to the University of Michigan and other North American universities and for candidates seeking professional certification; the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE) for use internationally for professional and academic purposes by individuals seeking evidence of advanced-level proficiency in English; and the Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) for use internationally for occupational and educational purposes by individuals seeking evidence of intermediate-level proficiency in English. Altogether, over a hundred thousand individuals take one of the Michigan Tests annually.

In addition, through Test Publications, the division publishes and sells language tests developed at the ELI to other educational institutions and consults on their appropriate use. Finally, in addition to the regular research inherent in test development, the division pursues broader research and service goals related to language test development and to contributing to the knowledge base in the field of language testing.
