Classical Cultural Studies

Many of our faculty and students have one foot in classical antiquity and another in post-classical areas-the Middle Ages, Romanticism, Victorianism, contemporary gender studies, aesthetics, and histories of modern disciplines. Catherine Brown, Anne Carson, Vassilios Lambropoulos and Yopie Prins are at the forefront of new thinking about the classical world's relation to modernity. A significant resource here is Contexts for Classics an initiative that brings together scholars from many different disciplines and departments, at Michigan, across the country, and internationally, who want to stretch the influence of the classics beyond philology and close reading to consider large cultural questions.
