Spotlight on "Student Success 2007" - January 2007

Denise Zakiya Fair, CSP Alum,
May 2005 B.A. Women’s Studies and CAAS

Denise will earn her Master’s of Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley’s School of Public Health in May 2007. Her passion and desire for a career in Health Administration has led her to apply for Post-Graduate Administrative Fellowships that are advertized by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). These fellowships are designed to supplement graduate-level coursework and residency experience with practical learning in a health-care setting. Over 1,000 students across the country apply for one of 160 spots within 75 programs. Fellows can choose a general fellowship or specialize in multi-hospital systems, academic medical centers, corporate administration, health insurance or group practice management.

Denise has accepted an offer with Trinity Health to be a fellow at their home office in Novi, MI. The Trinity Health Fellowship Program is designed to provide a one year educational experience for individuals who are interested in management responsibilities in nonprofit multi-unit health care systems and who have demonstrated the potential for high-level executive leadership in the field. Her experience will allow her to see the corporate/business side of healthcare coupled with the clinical side working at the local hospitals such as Oakland, Livonia and Battle Creek. Also, she will work very closely with the CEO and VP of Business Development. Denise is one step closer to becoming a Health Administrator!

Congratulations Denise and good luck on your fellowship.

Brook L. Spencer, CSP Alum,
May 2002 B.S. Chemistry

Brooke is currently an Internal Medicine Resident at Metro Health Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She received her M.D. degree in May 2006 from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She recently visited the CSP office and will be attending the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. Brooke explains why getting this additional degree is so important to her:

“I will be studying General Epidemiology. Which is one of the programs offered at Michigan’s SPH. I am applying to four year Radiation Oncology residency programs and I will have a year in between the time I start Radiation Oncology residency and finishing my intern year-which I am completing now in Internal Medicine. So I have decided to complete an MPH in general epidemiology which I will be able to do in one year at Michigan. This will provide me with various courses in biostastics and research design. This will be beneficial in the field of radiation oncology because it very research oriented. Ultimately my goals is to be involved in research as well as patient care within the field of radiation oncology and with a MPH in general epidemiology I will be a better prepared physician.”

Thank you for keeping in touch Brooke and best wishes for a successful career in medicine. Your ambition is astounding!
