Location: Honors Lounge
Host Department: Honors Program
Do companies have a social responsibility to maximize their profits or to do good in the world? Can they do both? If they don’t do the first can they do the second? What can and should government do to encourage corporations to be good citizens? Do corporations even exist as entities that can act as citizens or have social responsibilities? Consider these questions and more at the next Ethics Lunch with Honors, 11/11/09. Professor Marina Whitman, who holds faculty appointments in the Ross School of Business and the Ford School of Public Policy, will lead a discussion of “Corporate Social Responsibility.” Prof. Whitman has had an illustrious career in both business and government: she was the first woman vice president of GM and the first woman on the President’s Council of Economic Advisors; she is now a member of the prestigious financial think tank, the Group of Thirty. She has a fascinating personal background, too: her father, an émigré from Hungary in the 1930’s, worked at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton; he invented game theory.
