Applying for Graduation: Honors Students

Honors students* who have completed 85 Credits Toward Program (CTP) should apply for graduation on Wolverine Access and submit Concentration/Minor Release Forms for each concentration/minor they have declared.  ALL graduation materials (even non-Honors concentration releases) should be submitted to the Honors Office.  Signed (hardcopy) release forms should be submitted to 1330 Mason Hall; emailed release forms should be sent to lsa-hnrs-gradwork@umich.edu.  Concentration/Minor Release Forms must be signed by or sent directly from a departmental advisor.

Once the online application and all audit forms have been received, students will receive an email within three weeks that states their progress toward degree requirements.  Ideally, students will initiate this process in the term prior to their expected graduation date.

Additionally, all Honors seniors, including RC/Honors students, should submit a Thesis Information Card to the Honors Office.  This card is not required in order to graduate, but it informs the Program of students’ specific areas of research and is used for inviting graduates and their families to the Honors Graduation Ceremony.

As stated above, in order for the student’s name to appear in the Commencement Guide, the online application needs to be completed no later than six weeks after classes begin in the term the student plans to graduate.  Attendance at Commencement (Honors or otherwise) does not confirm a student’s graduation.  Students are not officially graduated until all final grades and credits are posted to the transcript and the Honors Academic Auditor verifies that all degree requirements are met.  Official graduation usually occurs one month after Commencement.  Students who do not complete degree requirements in the term they applied for will be mailed a letter that states their outstanding degree requirements.  Diplomas are sent approximately 8 weeks after Commencement.

Students who drop or add concentrations and/or minors after they initially applied to graduation online should contact the Honors Auditor to be sure their graduation eligibility has not changed.  Students who need to change their graduation date in Wolverine Access must notify the Honors Auditor in writing by sending an email to lsa-hnrs-gradwork@umich.edu.  The request must come from the student’s umich.edu email account and include full name, UM ID number, and specific graduation date request.

Note for Residential College (RC)/Honors Students: The RC will process your senior audit and graduation.  However, as part of the Honors Program, you should also submit a Thesis Information Card to the Honors Office at 1330 Mason Hall.

Other Possible Required Forms:

  • Honors Thesis Intent Form for the Upper-Level Writing Requirement:

o   Honors students have the option of using their senior theses to satisfy the Upper-Level Writing Requirement (ULWR).  The intent form must be filled out by the student and the thesis advisor and then submitted to the Honors Office.  This should be completed within the first few weeks of the term the student plans to finish the thesis.  Fulfilling the ULWR hinges on satisfactory completion of the thesis. The form is available in the Honors Office or is downloadable from the Honors website http://www.lsa.umich.edu/honors.

  • Request to Submit a Single Honors Thesis in Two Concentrations:

o   Some students who decide to pursue Honors in two departments consider submitting a single thesis for both concentrations.  Students who intend to do this must obtain prior permission from their thesis advisor as well as an Honors concentration advisor in both departments and from a representative of the Honors Academic Board (HAB) in the Honors Program office.  The form is available in the Honors Office or is downloadable from the Honors website, http://www.lsa.umich.edu/honors.

*With only a few exceptions, such as Math and Computer Science, graduation with Honors requires the successful completion of a Senior Honors thesis.  If you are completing a thesis, even if you were not in the First & Second-year Honors Program, you are considered part of the Honors Program.  Conversely, if you were in the First & Second-year Honors Program, but have decided against writing a Senior Honors thesis, please inform the Honors Department as soon as you have made this decision.
