Online Catalogs

  • MIRLYN provides access to the University Library catalog MCAT, and other library catalogs, as well as indexes (see Indexes/Abstracts below). In addition to telnet access, a Web version of MIRLYN is available.
  • WorldCat contains records of any type of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries. WorldCat can be used to locate materials not owned by the UM. Requests for interlibrary loan can be made during your search session.

Indexes/Abstracts

  • A list of Indexes in MIRLYN, including many that cover language and linguistics materials.
  • Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA) provides information on the latest developments in the field of linguistics and its subdisciplines. Fields covered include child language acquisition, computational and mathematical linguistics, language therapy, dialectology, artificial intelligence, and bilingualism. Coverage: 1973–present.

  • The Modern Language Association Bibliography (MLAB) indexes critical materials on literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore. The MLA Bibliography covers 1963 to the present. It is updated 10 times a year, with approximately 45,000 records added annually.

  • ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) contains references to journals and documents in the area of education from 1966 to the present. ERIC contains two types of records: journals (EJ) and documents (ED).

  • FirstSearch offers 65 databases including many periodical indexes. Full text articles are available through some of the periodical indexes. Search options include email delivery of marked records.
  • Academic Universe provides full text access to newspapers, broadcast news transcripts, and general news topics including Chronicle of Higher Education. Academic Universe also includes Foreign Language News, Country Profiles, and Law Reviews.
  • ProQuest Direct Newspapers provides full text access to 10 newspapers: Chicago Tribune, Detroit News, International Herald-Tribune, Jerusalem Post, New York Times (last 90 days only), South China Morning Post, The Statesman (New Delhi), the Times of London, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal. Updated daily, with backfiles of several years.
  • ISI Database includes the Art & Humanities and Social Sciences Citation Index Databases. The cited reference search allows you to identify articles that cite a particular article. This can be used to follow research developments and locate articles on a particular topic.
  • Dissertation Abstracts (through FirstSearch) is an index to dissertations with abstracts for dissertations accepted after 1980.
  • Periodical Contents Index (PCI) a electronic index to contents of thousands of periodicals in humanities and social sciences from first issues to 1990/1991.

Athelstan ONLINE

Athelstan publishes and distributes products related to technology and second language learning, including CD-ROMS; software; videos; and reference materials, such as the Technology and Language Learning Yearbook and the Athelstan Newsletter, which is sent free to teachers in the United States.

Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL)

The CAL site provides access to two of the ERIC Clearinghouses (Adult ESL Literacy and Languages and Linguistics); three databases with information about immersion programs and foreign language tests; and a wide range of topic areas containing information about bilingual education, dialects, foreign language learning and teaching, language testing, refugee concerns, and literacy.
