About Elizabeth
Axelson
Elizabeth began teaching at the English Language Institute as a TA in 1984 and has been a full-time Lecturer III since 1989. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, she received a master's degree in applied linguistics from the University of Michigan and recently completed her PhD in linguistics in April 2003. Elizabeth's dissertation is a longitudinal study of the interaction of American and international graduate students in a master’s thesis project group. This study brings together the fields of discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and intercultural communication.
Elizabeth has utilized her work on the development if international discourse in group interaction to develop materials for instruction at the ELI, both for workshops and courses.
In addition, she currently coordinates, with CRLT, the College of Engineering GSI Orientation, as well as teaching the ELI course for prospective GSIs (ELI 380) and the seminar and practicum for those in their first semester of teaching (ELI 584). Her research in this area includes two publications, "Discourse Strategies for ITAs Across Instructional Contexts" (1994) and "Video-Based Materials for Communicative ITA Training" (1990). She has also been instrumental in developing a website to display and share discourse based materials for GSI educators (ITA-Interest Section Special Project, 1999-2000). This website is intended to educate GSI trainers in the creation, analysis and use of transcripts in instruction, and to share transcripts and materials already developed for training. Elizabeth's focus on oral skills from a discourse perspective is also utilized in the ELI’s advanced course for visiting scholars (VS3), developed in collaboration with John Swales, which prepares visiting scholars for conference presentations, departmental colloquia, and research paper writing.
