Spotlight on "Student Success 2008" - April 2008

Fasika B. Aberra, CSP Senior,
B.S. in Brain, Behavior and Cognitive Science, May 2008

Fasika has been accepted to the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She will begin in July 2008. Fasika was also accepted into the University of Michigan Medical School. She has maintained an outstanding grade point which earned her the title of James B. Angell Scholar. As part of her premedical endeavors, Faskia volunteered at the University of Michigan Hospital in the Taubman Center Pediatric Multispeciality Clinic and Mott Children?s Hospital. She also did work at the Arbor Hospice and Sunrise Assited Living Facility. Fasika tutored Chemistry and Physics through CSP and the SLC. In summer 2006, she participated in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at Case Western. We send our best wishes for a successful career in medicine.

Lys Inungu - CSP Senior,
B.A. Political Science, minor Program in the Environment, May 2008

In the summer of 2007, Lys traveled to South Africa as a recipient of Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute Field Research Grant. She did this trip through the U of M -Global Intercultural Exchange for Undergraduates (GIEU). Under the guidance of Dr. Nesha Haniff, Professor of Women's Studies and CAAS, she learned a module that explained HIV/AIDS-that can be taught without the use of a pen or paper. This module ended up being translated into 10 languages. Renee Pitter, CSP Alum,
B.A. AfroAmerican & African Studies and Political Science, August 2006

Renee is featured in the February 2008 edition of Michigan Today. She is currently a graduate student in the University of Michigan, School of Public Health studying Health Behavior and Health Education. Renee has participated in two Global Intercultural Exchange for Undergraduate (GIEU) trips. Her most recent trip was to South Africa. “Pitter and her colleagues taught people who would be responsible for teaching others about HIV awareness using a verbal method designed to reach illiterate and low-literate communities.”(Michigan Today, February 2008).
