An interest in translation studies that embraces both the practice of transferring meaning from one language to another and the role of translation as a critical operator in the large-scale processes of globalization and transculturation. Among our faculty are award-winning translators and committed theorists of cultural translation: Anne Carson, Alina Clej, Kader Konuk, Christi Anne Merrill, Tomoko Masuzawa, Yopie Prins, and Anton Shammas. Our graduate students have published translations of novels and poetry collections, and regularly teach our innovative first-year writing course, "Writing World Literatures," which combines composition and translation theory to improve both the writing and cultural fluency of our undergraduate students.
