Ruins of Modernity Series
- Detailed Information: Boris Mikhailov is the former Soviet Union’s most influential living photographer. He divides his time between his native Kharkov (Ukraine) and Berlin. During the 1970s and 1980s, Mikhailov’s photographs featured satirical criticism of the Soviet regime. Since the demise of the Soviet Union, he has documented the poverty and social collapse that has enveloped his homeland.
The series Case History (1997–98) includes almost 500 photographs and focuses on the homeless of Kharkov.
In this talk, Mikhailov will describe his artistic journey with a focus on his more recent work. (A selection of his photographs is now on exhibit in the Osterman Common Room.)
Mikhailov will participate in a conference, Ruins of Modernity, to be held at the University of Michigan, March 17, 18 and 19.
