Selection Process...**

Candidates for the Peer Tutor Program must be nominated or recommended by a faculty member or GSI. To earn a nomination, students must demonstrate a strong command of the English language through their writing and verbal communication skills. In addition to being nominated, candidates must also complete an application (available online October 1), which includes writing an essay and submitting an academic writing sample from a University of Michigan course. Enrollment in the Peer Tutor Program is by invitation and application only.**

Training Program...**

Students accepted into the Peer Tutor Program enroll in a sequence of two courses:

  1. SWC 300: Seminar in Peer Tutoring: a full-semester training course designed to acclimate new tutors to the challenges of tutoring writing. Through written exercises and observations of peer tutoring sessions, SWC 300 students gain valuable communication skills and knowledge of writing in several disciplines of study.
  2. SWC 301: Directed Peer Tutoring: Upon completion of SWC 300, tutors enroll in SWC 301 where they tutor up to four hours per week and meet as a group with a Sweetland faculty member for a weekly hour-long discussion. During this hour, tutors and the instructor exchange tutoring experiences and discuss the application of concepts learned in SWC 300.**

Opportunities for Employment...**

Outstanding tutors who have completed the required courses may be selected to tutor for pay during future terms. Additional opportunities may be available, including SWC 100 course assistantships and internships with the Sweetland Writing Center.**
