How do ECCE and ECPE exams relate to the CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) includes six common reference levels, ranging from basic user to master as defined by the Council of Europe (2001). These are:

  • The ECCE (Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English) is an assessment instrument for Vantage Level (B2), Independent Users on the CEFR Scale.

  • The ECPE (Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English) is an assessment instrument for Mastery Level (C2), Proficient Users on the CEFR Scale.

Reference: Council of Europe (2001). Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
