The Writing Workshop at the Sweetland Writing Center is designed to help students strengthen their writing skills so that, over time, they will develop writing and revision independence.

The Sweetland Writing Center uses WCOnline, a web-based application, for scheduling all one-on-one Writing Workshop appointments.  First time users need to register with WCOnline using their umich.edu email address.  Once you have registered and logged in, you will be able to view a schedule of available appointment times and tutors.  Note:  Students need to re-register at the start of every academic year

The ELI Undergraduate Writing Clinic has a satellite location at the Sweetland Writing Center.  The ELI Fall 09 schedule is where students who speak English as a second language can schedule an appointment with an ESL specialist.

You are required to read the Sweetland Writing Center policies before scheduling your first appointment.

Sweetland Writing Center Policies:

  • Undergraduate students may schedule no more than one 30-minute appointment per week, with a limit of fourteen visits, including walk-ins, each fall and winter term, and a limit of seven each spring and summer half-term.
  • Graduate students may schedule no more than one 60-minute appointment per week, with a limit of seven visits, including walk-ins, each fall and winter term, and a limit of four each spring and summer half-term.
  • Students who speak English as a second language are allowed one 45-minute appointment per week.  Undergraduates have a limit of fourteen visits and graduates have a limit of seven during fall and winter term.
  • Appointments can only be scheduled one week in advance.
  • Students may also receive help on a walk-in basis if there are openings in the schedule and they have not reached their limit of visits.
  • Students are responsible for scheduling, modifying and canceling their own appointments.  A student modifying or canceling their appointment must do so at least 90 minutes prior to their appointment time in order to not be considered a no-show.  If a student fails to show up for an appointment they will be unable to schedule another appointment for one week.
  • Students who arrive more than ten minutes late will forfeit their appointment and will not be able to schedule another appointment for one week and will be considered a no-show.
  • Students who accrue two or more no-shows, will be unable to schedule an appointment for the remainder of the semester.  However, students may continue to use our services on a walk-in basis.  If the Sweetland Writing Center needs to cancel an appointment due to instructor illness, students will be notified by phone as soon as possible.  The Sweetland Writing Center will make every effort before cancelling an appointment to find and schedule an alternative instructor for the same time as the original appointment.
  • Students seeking assistance with take home exams must have their instructor forward permission to swc.info@umich.edu at least one day before their scheduled appointment.
  • Writing Workshop instructors will not help students with personal statements, application materials or proofreading.
