Research Collections

The University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology has many large and outstanding collections that offer unlimited potential for student and professional research. Most of these collections derive from excavations and surveys throughout the world, and include artifacts such as pottery, flaked and groundstone tools, animal bones, ethnobotanical and sediment samples, and accompanying field notes, site and survey maps, photographs, and other relevant documents and records. Among the largest archaeological collections are those from Michigan and the surrounding Great Lakes area, Eastern North America, East and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. There are also a number of smaller though important archaeological collections from West Africa, Latin America, and Europe. In addition to its archaeological holdings, the Museum has large ethnographic collections, which include objects of pottery, basketry, clothing and textiles, wood, metal and many other materials. There are also extensive photographic collections, including black and white photographs and associated negatives, and thousands of 35 mm color slides, many of which are now digitized.
