In 2002, the Bentley Historical Library, in conjunction with the Museum, was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to archive the papers of five past curators of the Museum along with the papers from two local amateur archaeologists. The project included papers from James Griffin, Wilbert Hinsdale, Volney Jones, Melvin Gilmore, Emerson Greenman, Ira Butterfield, and George Fox. The eighteen-month project organized the papers and photographs from these seven individuals and produced both hard copies and electronic versions of finding aids for the materials. Additional archive collections relating to the Museum include the papers of Carl E. Guthe, Joseph Beal-Steere, Walter Koelz, Dean C. Worcester, and general Museum of Anthropology records. For questions or access to these collections, please contact the Bentley Historical Library.
The Museum also has in its possession an immense photographic collection that has been used both for teaching and documentation of archaeological field work. The collections consist of approximately 20,000 color 35mm slides; 24,000 black and white negatives; 5,000 lantern slides; and several hundred glass negatives. In order to make these valuable collections more accessible, the Museum was awarded a grant from the Information Technology Committee in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts to digitize the teaching slide collection. With this funding, the Museum was able to develop its own Microsoft Access database for data storage and scan about 14,000 slides to be used by professors across campus and the general public through the Internet. To continue its preservation scanning efforts, the Museum applied for and was awarded an NEH grant to digitize the James B. Griffin collection of 18,000 color slides. These slides represent over 50 years of archaeological and anthropological research by Griffin and his peers. This project is on going and will conclude in the fall of 2005. Access to the scanned images is available through our online catalogs.
Other photographic collections within the Museum include a set of roughly 5,000 glass negatives taken by Dean C. Worcester from his time spent in the Philippines between 1890 and 1920.
Images from the Museum's extensive collection are available for purchase. Please see the Photographic Reproduction Policy (pdf) for information about use of images and the Fee Schedule (pdf) for pricing. All requests for reproductions of photographs from the collections must be made on the Museum's Application for Use of Still Images (pdf).
