About Us

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) is a national award winning program which creates research partnerships between first and second year students and University of Michigan faculty and research scientists. All schools and colleges of the University of Michigan are active participants in UROP, thereby providing a wealth of research topics from which a student can choose. Begun in 1989 with 14 student/faculty partnerships the program continues to grow, now engaging 1000 students in unique hands on learning collaborations with 600 research sponsors. What better way for undergraduate students to learn about an academic discipline and to discover their career and life goals?
The UROP experience consists of first and second year UM undergraduate students collaborating with UM faculty and research scientists on projects that run the entire academic year, September through April. Research sponsors submit a research sponsor application form describing the project, stating the number of students desired and the hours per week the student is required to assist. Students apply and are admitted to UROP in Spring and early summer for the upcoming academic year. In September admitted students identify projects of interest and apply directly to the project. Sponsors select students to interview from these contacts and make decisions on who to hire. The majority of students start working on projects by the end of September.
UROP also sponsors several Summer Research Fellowship Programs that provide a full time, independent research experience for UM undergraduate students from May to mid August. Students submit an extensive application, including a research proposal, by the end of January. These fellowships are competitive.
