Juniors & Seniors
This program is designed for third and fourth year undergraduate students, regardless of major and GPA, who have not yet had any significant or prior research experience. The goal of the program is to provide a professional research experience based on the student’s interest. UROP is committed to increasing the overall preparation and readiness for juniors and seniors to enter professional/graduate school and/or to pursue a career whereby their undergraduate competencies will flourish!
Program Goals:
- Provide a Junior/Senior hands-on research experience
- Partner students with a faculty mentor
- Develop an individual academic and/or career plan for use after graduation
- Help students develop research skills useful in graduate school and or career
- Help students explore and to take advantage of resources and opportunities the University offers
- Help students stretch themselves intellectually and to think of graduate school programs, particularly those engaging in research, as pathways for success
- Match students to a graduate/professional student mentor based on their future academic interest and/or career interest.
Program Requirements:
- Conduct research 6-12 hours on average, per week, for the full academic year
- Attend bi-weekly research seminars on Wednesdays from 5:30pm– 7:00pm, which are interdisciplinary in focus and include guest speakers, field trips, and discussions designed to introduce students to research issues such as research methodology and research ethics.
- Complete journal writing assignments, read assigned texts
- Develop an e-portfolio detailing the research the student is working on
- Meet with a UROP Peer Advisor at least once per month
- Present a poster at the annual Spring Research Symposium.
Program Compensation:
- Academic credit: Students can earn 2-4 academic credits per term, based on the level of research effort. Students will register by permission for UROP credit upon being hired to a research project.
- Work-Study: Students who have received a work study award as part of their financial aid package can earn work study wages for their work on the research project. Students will complete employment paperwork after being hired to a research project.
Eligibility:
- A current UM student who has earned a minimum of 55 academic credits by the start of the Fall 2009 term.
- A Transfer student admitted prior to Winter 2009. (If you are a student who’s first term at UM-Ann Arbor was Winter 2009 or will be Fall 2009 please fill out the UROP Student Application.
Application Process:
Students interested in applying for the Fall 2010/Winter 2011 should contact John Vasquez, Assistant Director of UROP and the Coordinator of the Junior Senior Program at johnav@umich.edu and ask to be put on the email list for next year.
Applications for the Fall 2010/Winter 2011 Academic Program will be available by March 1, 2010.
**Please Note: Students currently participating in UROP or participate in past years are NOT eligible to apply. Only Juniors or Seniors who have NEVER had a research experience are eligible to apply.
