Students: Learn more about how you can present your research results at NCUR, a conference for undergraduate student researchers.

Programs

UROP is designed to assist University of Michigan undergraduate students enrolled on the Ann Arbor campus to discover the world of research through collaborations with UM researchers.  Student research assistants work alongside a faculty member, research scientist or professional practitioner on an ongoing or new research project. While primarily for first and second year students, there are a small number of opportunities for juniors and seniors.  All students participating in UROP are:

The specific programs offered and associated requirements are listed below.

Academic Year:  September through April

UROP+details
 First and second year UM students

  • Program Goals:
  • Introduce first and second year students into the various field of research
  • Partner students with a faculty mentor
  • Identify academic & career interests
  • Apply real world applications to the classroom
  • Help students develop critical thinking & problem solving skills
  • Help students develop research skills useful in their courses
  • Help students meet great people and participate in diverse research teams
  • Help students stretch themselves intellectually - learn to think in creative innovative ways
  • Program Requirements:
  • Conduct research 6-12 hours on average, per week, for the full academic year
  • Attend bi-weekly research seminars on Wednesdays from 6:00 – 7:30pm, which are interdisciplinary in focus and include guest speakers, field trips, and discussions designed to introduce students to research issues such as research methodology and research ethics.
  • Complete journal writing assignments, read assigned texts
  • Present a poster at the annual Spring Research Symposium.
  • Meet with a UROP Peer Advisor once per month
  • Program Compensation:
  • Academic credit: Students can earn 2-4 academic credits per term, based on the level of research effort. Students will register by permission for UROP credit upon being hired to a research project.
  • Work-Study: Students who have received a work study award as part of their financial aid package can earn work study wages for their work on the research project. Students will complete employment paperwork after being hired to a research project.
  • Application Process:
  • For currently enrolled first year students, regardless of academic standing (i.e. you are applying to UROP and, if accepted, would start during your SECOND year at UM ):

    April 18 Deadline to accept admissions offer

    For incoming first year students and transfer students whose first term of enrollment will be either Spring/Summer or Fall (i.e. you are applying to UROP and, if accepted, would start during your FIRST year at UM, regardless of your academic standing):

Research Scholars Program+details
Second year UM students who participated in UROP as a first year student

  • This program was developed in response to student demand to return to UROP for a second year research experience. In addition, this program is designed to address the sophomore year experience.
  • Program Goals:
  • Provide a second year hands-on research experience
  • Develop a stronger faculty-student research partnership
  • Develop more student independence in the research environment
  • Provide students with skills to be academically successful
  • Help students to explore and to take advantage of resources and opportunities the University offers
  • Provide a framework for exploring careers that involve a research component
  • Guide students to consider research internships and Graduate school
  • Develop an individual academic plan
  • Program Requirements:
  • Conduct research 6 -12 hours per week either on the original project or a new project.
  • Attend bi-weekly research seminars which are interdisciplinary in focus [5:30 - 7:00 p.m. or 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.]
  • Complete journal writing assignments, read assigned texts and complete an end of term project each term.
  • Meet with a UROP Peer Advisor once per month.
  • Give a poster presentation of the research findings at the Research Forum in April.
  • Program Compensation:
  • Academic credit: Students can earn 2-4 academic credits per term, based on the level of research effort. Students will register by permission for UROP credit upon being hired to a research project.
  • Work-Study: Students who have received a work study award as part of their financial aid package can earn work study wages for their work on the research project. Students will complete employment paperwork after being hired to a research project.
  • Eligibility:
  • To be eligible for admission to the Research Scholars Program, students must have:
  • completed one full year of UROP
  • re-applied to UROP and been accepted to participate for a second year
  • second year standing at start of Fall term


  • Students meeting these initial requirements will be invited to apply to be a Research Scholar. The Research Scholars application includes several short answer questions to help determine the level of interest the student has in pursuing research, how the research experience with help the student meet personal academic and career goals; how much effort the student will give to the program; and what the student believes he/she can contribute to the program.

Junior Senior Program+details
Third and fourth year students seeking a first time research opportunity

  • This program is designed for third and fourth year undergraduate students, regardless of major and GPA, who have not yet had any significant or prior research experience. The goal of the program is to provide a professional research experience based on the student’s interest. UROP is committed to increasing the overall preparation and readiness for juniors and seniors to enter professional/graduate school and/or to pursue a career whereby their undergraduate competencies will flourish!

  • Program Goals:
  • Provide a Junior/Senior hands-on research experience
  • Partner students with a faculty mentor
  • Develop an individual academic and/or career plan for use after graduation
  • Help students develop research skills useful in graduate school and or career
  • Help students explore and to take advantage of resources and opportunities the University offers
  • Help students stretch themselves intellectually and to think of graduate school programs, particularly those engaging in research, as pathways for success
  • Match students to a graduate/professional student mentor based on their future academic interest and/or career interest.

  • Program Requirements:
