UROP Sponsor Timeline
SEPTEMBER
Research sponsor-student partnerships are formed during the month of September. You will select your UROP student from our pool of 1000 first and second year students. UROP students will be given access to the UROP project listings at the start of Fall term. Students review the projects, select projects of interest and then contact sponsors, usually via e-mail, to request an interview. The students will provide you with a resume.
You may interview as many or as few students as you like. This selection method is used to ensure your finding the student(s) you would like to work with and vice versa. When you determine which student you believe is a good match, you should offer the position to the student. It is not uncommon for some students to receive several offers. They may take several days to notify you about their decision.
OCTOBER
To conclude the hiring process, UROP students must complete a UROP contract and bring it to the UROP Office by October 2nd. The student will bring the contract to you for your signature. By signing this contract, you commit to working with the student for the Fall and Winter terms. The contract includes the number of hours per week the student agrees to work on the project, time sheet signature verification, and the student’s program requirements. When you have signed the contract, your student should submit it to the UROP Office. The student may then begin to work on the project. Note: the student should submit the completed contract to UROP, not the faculty sponsor, as the student will then need to get instructions for registering for academic credit and get electronic permission to register. Some students will also need to complete employment paperwork.
To Close your project:
Contact the UROP Office when you would like to close your project. We will notify students that the project is closed so they will stop contacting you to request interviews. Conversely, let the UROP Office know if you have not had any student show an interest. We will work with you to help generate student interest in your project.
Special Consideration: We ask that you give first preference to hiring UROP students. You may be approached by a student who has not yet been admitted to UROP. Please refer this student to the UROP Office for admissions consideration prior to offering to hire the student. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to admit a student after the start of the academic year as we continue to have an extensive student wait list.
NOVEMBER
During this month your student will be assigned a research abstract assignment. The student is required to talk with you regarding the research project they are working on and submit a 250 word abstract. The purpose of this assignment is two-fold: 1) Provide the student with an opportunity to explain what HE/SHE knows about the project, but more importantly, 2) begin to work on their poster presentation which will be presented as part of the UROP Spring Symposium in April.
