One of the most unique and beneficial components of UROP is peer mentoring. UROP Peer Advisors provide extensive, personal support to UROP students throughout the academic year. Peer advising encourages UROP students to identify their own research and academic goals and then helps students with strategies and activities to meet these goals. This mentorship enhances the UROP research experience and leads to greater student success and satisfaction at UM.
How Peer Advising Works at UROP
Once accepted to UROP, each student is assigned to a Peer Advisor as well as a student peer group of approximately 35 students based on the student’s choice of academic discipline as noted on the UROP application. Students meet bi-weekly with their peer group to discuss research issues in a research seminar facilitated by their Peer Advisor. Students also meet individually with their Peer Advisor once per month. This meeting allows the Peer Advisor to listen to the student’s concerns about work on the research project, academics or campus life and to be an advocate for the student. Peer Advisors can also share pertinent information about UROP and tips for success.
Who are UROP Peer Advisors?
UROP’s Peer Advisors are current UM juniors and seniors who have previously participated in UROP for at least one year. They are selected through an application process that begins in January. UROP’s Peer Advisors have a keen interest in research issues, demonstrate an ability and desire to help students succeed and have leadership qualities. Peer Advisors are selected to lead peer groups that address issues in biomedical sciences, engineering and physical sciences, humanities, social sciences, natural resources and the environment, and women in science and engineering.
