Admissions Notification
Students will be notified of their acceptance to UROP via mail, May through August. The admissions packet is mailed to the student’s permanent address as given on the UROP application form.
Acceptance of Admissions Offer
If you received a notification of your acceptance to UROP, you must complete the Acceptance Form to secure your place in the program. Information about this acceptance process is included in your UROP admissions material. Please notify UROP even if you are not planning on participating as your place can then be offered to a student on the wait list.
Waitlisted Students
UROP does not keep an “ordered” waitlist and therefore cannot inform students of their rank on the waitlist. Waitlisted students will be offered admissions as space opens. The number of students that can be admitted from the waitlist is dependent on the number of students who do not accept their offer of admissions and the number of available projects. Many waitlisted students are offered admissions shortly before the first day or during the first week of Fall classes. Consequently, you should keep your course schedule flexible to accommodate a late admissions offer if you really want to participate in UROP. There is nothing you can do to improve upon your situation other than to keep in close contact with the UROP Office about your continued interest to participate. Contacting a UROP faculty sponsor without being accepted to UROP first will not improve your chance for acceptance.
Summer Orientation Info Session
Incoming first year students who are planning to participate in UROP during Fall term are encouraged to attend the UROP Info Session during UM’s Summer Orientation. The session is held after dinner on the second day. Led by a UROP Peer Advisor, the session is a good way to learn more about UROP, including the process for finding a research project, and when and how to register for UROP.
UROP Open House
Plan to attend UROP’s Open House on the Friday afternoon of UM’s Welcome Week. This is an opportunity for you to find the UROP Office as well as to meet your Peer Advisor. Details will be included in the mid-August mailing to admitted students.
Enrollment Workshop
All students planning on participating in UROP must attend UROP’s Enrollment Workshop held the first Wednesday of Fall term. Students will be sent information about the date and location of the enrollment workshop in mid-August. Also included in this notification is the name of your UROP Peer Advisor and the Peer Group to which you have been assigned.
At the Enrollment Workshop, you will receive a course syllabus outlining UROP activities, research seminar dates and topics, journal assignments and UC 280 attendance and grading policies. You will also learn how to find a research project and how to register for academic credit. Work study students will also learn about employment paperwork. Students will receive a UROP Packet which includes the UROP Student Handbook, the official document of UROP policies and student guidelines for participation in the program.
