Michigan Community College Student Summer Fellowship Program

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, with funding from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, is offering summer research fellowships for current community college students interested in transferring to University of Michigan and for students who plan to transfer to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in either Fall 2010 or Winter 2011. The program is intended to increase your skills and knowledge in a specific field and help you explore an area of interest for potential graduate work. You will be expected to work 20-40 hours per week for a 10-12 week period between May – August and attend a bi-weekly research seminar with a UROP facilitator.

Requirements:
ALL DOCUMENTS MUST BE UPLOADED IN PDF FORMATS.  In addition, they should include a header or footer and page numbers. The file should be saved as (First Name. Last Name 2010).

2. Personal Statement

The personal statement is your opportunity to showcase your skills and qualifications pertaining to the fellowship. The personal statement should include your academic and/or professional career goals, why you want to attend the University of Michigan and any personal characteristics that you think we should know about that would make you stand out as a candidate for the program. Additionally, the personal statement gives you an opportunity to explain potential hardships or drawbacks in other areas of your application.

3. Research Statement

The research statement is a document that describes the type of research you want to conduct, why you want to conduct it, and what you hope to gain from participating in research.  Students are strongly encourage to browse the section of UROP's web site called "Sample Projects" to view samples of the different type of research being conducted at the university.

4. Recommendation Letters

You will need 2 recommendation letters; one letter must be from a faculty member, graduate student instructor, or academic advisor who can speak specifically about your academic or abilities. The other can be from anyone you have a professional relationship with. If you are hoping to work in the biomedical sciences field, one of your letters should be from a faculty member who can talk about your can speak specifically about your ability to do such research (e.g. biology professor, chemistry professor, honors advisor, etc.).  

Each recommender must write a letter of recommendation, complete a Recommendation Form, and submit both the form and the letter of recommendation electronically (as a pdf).

5. Resume

You must submit a PDF file as part of your UROP Application.

6. Official Transcript

You will need to submit a copy of your high school transcript AND an official transcript from the current community college you are attending and any other colleges you may have attended in the past.
