Smith Lecture: Enigmatic Proterozoic and Early Paleozoic fossils Illuminated by Modern Algae and Bryophytes and their Microbiome
The taxonomic affinities and ecological roles of Proterozoic and early Paleozoic microfossils hypothetically linked to algae or early land plants are often difficult to determine. Studies of degradation resistance of modern algae and bryophytes have revealed biochemical features that foster persistence in the fossil record of remains having distinctive features that reveal taxonomic affinity. High-throughput microbiome sequencing of the same modern algae and bryophytes reveal microbial associations and genes that extend host functionalities beyond photosynthesis in diverse and surprising ways, and allow us to infer the biogeochemical roles of ancient relatives.
