  • About

Dr. Barbehenn received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1989. His postdoctoral work was done with Professor Michael Martin in the Department of Biology at U. of M. Dr. Barbehenn's research focuses on the biochemical and physiological mechanisms that explain the interactions between insect herbivores and their host plants. What are the adaptations of insects that allow them to feed on potentially toxic leaves? In turn, what are the chemical defenses of plants that limit the abilities of most insects to feed on them? The Barbehenn lab works on phenolic compounds (tannins) in tree leaves as well as oxidative enzymes that may further protect plants from insect attack.
