Note: To prepare for this discussion, please read the original 1972 Letter and the new 2013 Letter, posted here and in the RSVP site.

In September, Professor Timothy Johnson published an open letter in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and drew attention to it through an op-ed piece in the Detroit Free Press.  Co-signed by 99 colleagues, the letter sets out the dangers to women inherent in the growing legislative restrictions on access to safe abortions.  The letter draws on the important heritage of an earlier letter, also signed by 100 physicians, written 41 years ago on the eve of the Roe v. Wade decision calling for hospitals and doctors to prepare for an increase in demand for abortions.  That letter had been written by Professor J. Robert Willson, long-time chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UM Hospital, and Bates Professor of Diseases of Women and Children at UM Medical School.  Come to hear Professor Johnson discuss the history and politics of abortion and other reproductive care, and discuss with him the challenges for our time.  This is a chance to discuss these crucial issues with a national leader in the field.

Timothy R. B. Johnson is the Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UM Medical School and UM’s Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.  He is also Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, Professor of Women's Studies, and Research Professor in the Center for Human Growth and Development.  Prof. Johnson is an Honors alumnus and a long-time friend of the Honors Program.
