  • Speaker: Breck Owens, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
  • Host Department: Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Date: 11/01/2013
  • Time: 04:00 PM - 05:00 PM

  • Location: 1528 C. C. Little Building

  • Description:

Dr. Owens was one of the first steering committee members for the ARGO program, which presently samples the ocean using 3,000 autonomous floats, thus representing the first-ever continuous near-real-time global data array for the subsurface ocean.  Dr. Owens will describe the many applications of ARGO, including estimation of the ocean thermal expansion contribution to sea level rise.  Dr. Owens will also describe his ongoing work with gliders, which can be steered to take measurements at targeted locations, at a fraction of the cost of traditional ship-based methods.
