Physics Student Services Manager Christine Betz Bolang Receives LSA Service Award

Department of Physics Student Services Manager Christine Betz Bolang is the 2013 recipient of the Kay Beattie Distinguished Service Award from the College of Literature, Science, and Arts (LSA). Chris’s primary responsibilities include: managing the Physics Department’s Student Services Office; working closely with faculty regarding class development and scheduling to name a few; and academic progress for physics undergraduate and graduate students.

Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Physics and Astronomy, August E. Evrard relays his opinion of Christine,“I think of Chris as a wonderful mixture of General George C. Patton and Tinker Bell; she can be tough when she needs to be but she always seems to have some magic dust to sprinkle in the room before things get really sticky.”

He continues, “Christine Betz Bolang is an exemplary member of the Michigan community. In a short time, she completely remade our Student Services Office from a primarily faculty-oriented to a more student-focused entity, maintaining and enhancing a welcoming and supportive environment for all in the process.”

“She is an efficient, organized and effective administrator, but even more importantly, she has a clear vision for her office, and its interaction with the faculty and students,” said Associate Chair of the Physics Department and Professor Robert Savit.

Christine has worked for the University for over 17 years. She has exhibited progressive career advancement, taking on increasing levels of responsibility, and has sustained noteworthy performance throughout her career at the University.

The Kay Beattie Distinguished Service Award signifies exceptional and outstanding performance and dedication in the following areas:

  • Showed willingness to help others achieve their goals
  • Exercised outstanding supervisory or mentoring skills; facilitating the success of others.
  • Exhibited strong work qualities such as dependability, patience and commitment
  • Demonstrated a willingness to take on new and/or additional tasks; pitched in when needed
  • Fostered collaboration and cooperation among colleagues
  • Demonstrated exemplary citizenship within the College

Kay Beattie retired from the LSA Dean’s Office in 2007, after 40 years of service to the University. This award was established in her honor by former Dean Terry McDonald. Presented to an employee with more than 15 years of service at the University who has exhibited progressive career advancement, taking on increasing levels of responsibility with a significant portion of his/her career in LSA.
