Voices of the Middle West: A Celebration of Writers and Independent Presses
Midwestern Gothic and the University of Michigan’s Residential College are partnering to create Voices of the Middle West, a festival and book fair featuring writers and presses from all over the Midwest. Voices of the Middle West will showcase the magnificent literary work being produced in our region, the stories that need to be told…the voices that need to be heard. Held on the campus of the University of Michigan, Voices of the Middle West will take place in East Quad on Saturday, March 22, from 10 AM to 6 PM. The event is free and open to the public.
This one-day conference and book fair will bring together writers, independent publishers, UM faculty and students, and our regional literary community. We’ll gather a variety of voices, from the Detroit area to "up north," all in one place, all on one day, to celebrate the diversity and richness of our regional literature. Area authors, publishers, and UM faculty will offer panel discussions on writing opportunities, the art and business of publishing, and the current state of Midwest literature. The book fair will showcase literary organizations, publishers, and authors from the Detroit area, Southeastern Michigan, and Mid-Michigan.
The festival will be headlined by a special keynote speaker, lifelong Midwesterner Curtis Sittenfeld, author of the bestselling novels Sisterland, American Wife, Prep, and The Man of My Dreams. Prep was chosen as one of the Ten Best Books of 2005 by The New York Times, and American Wife was chosen as one of the Ten Best Books of 2008 by Time, People, and Entertainment Weekly; both were nominated for the UK’s Orange Prize.
The festival will also offer an open mic, a panel discussion of campus student literary publications, and a raffle.
Throughout the day there will be a bookfair held in the atrium of the newly renovated East Quad. The bookfair will showcase literary journals and independent presses from all over the Midwest selling their latest issues and books. Panelists’ and featured writers’ books will be available as well.
