Carmen Souza in Concert
Carmen Souza is considered one of the foremost emerging artists in the realm of world music/jazz today. Carmen is part of a vanguard of young Cape Verdean artists on the islands and in the diaspora (particularly in Europe), who are following the path laid out by the mother of Cape Verdean music, the late Cesária Évora. The younger generation is taking Cape Verdean roots music to new territories by combining the islands' astonishingly rich traditions with modern sounds from a variety of sources (jazz, Afro-pop, Brazilian, and Caribbean).
Carmen Souza will travel with three other musicians as a quartet. While at the University of Michigan, Souza will perform a concert at The Ark in Ann Arbor on Tuesday, April 1 at 8 pm. Free Admission with U-M ID. There will also be a workshop on the practice of jazz fusion with African roots music (particularly from the Cape Verde Islands) on Wednesday, April 2, 5pm at North Quad 2435. This workshop will feature Carmen and her mentor, co-songwriter/composer and bass player, Theo Pascal.
