HistLing/SoConDi: Bilingual Language Development: Turkish and German in Berlin 1983-2013
This week, SoConDi and HistLing will have a joint meeting. The meeting will also run 30 minutes longer than usually, but for a good reason! We are fortunate to have a visitor who will give a presentation at this meeting. Carol Pfaff from the Feir Universitaet Berlin will give a presentation on her work about Turkish in German. The title of her talk, together with an abstract, is given below.
Bilingual Language Development: Turkish and German in Berlin 1983-2013
This talk presents aspects of the German and Turkish development of bilingual children and adolescents from findings of three empirical studies of both languages. After briefly describing the sociolinguistic setting and language ecological situation of Turkish-speakers in Berlin, I turn to the (incomplete) acquisition and language contact phenomena in areas where the morphosyntactic typology of the two languages differ sharply: prodrop/non-prodrop and fusion in German vs. agglutinativity in Turkish.
