This course explores the ways that ideas, people, goods, and natural resources flow across political and cultural borders, examines the consequences of those flows and helps students understand how an interest in these topics can be the basis for a professional career. Designed for freshmen and sophomores, but open to any undergraduate, the course is intended to stimulate interest in further course work in International Studies. It is a core course for the International Studies major and it fills the geography requirement for students in the School of Education.
The modules cover globalization or the transnational movement of information, capital, goods, people and ideas; international organizations and relations; human rights and human security; geography, earth systems, and human development; and culture and identity.
The three GSIs selected for this course will have the following responsibilities:
- Grading, including written assignments, exams, and class participation
- Course logistics, including maintenance of the course web site;
- Working with guest lecturers, including the selection of readings;
- Leading three discussion sections, which will meet bi-weekly;
- Student advising, with regular office hours, especially on the development of paper topics;
FTE: Three positions at 50%.
Minimum qualifications: Graduate students in any social science discipline or professional school are invited to apply.
Selection criteria: We will choose applicants with the strongest and most relevant teaching experience, work experience, and academic training.
