The working title for my dissertation is “Grasping the Gulf: Commerce and Colonialism in Florida and Yucatán, 1788-1854.” In this project, I investigate Indigenous peoples' responses to the commercial and military violence that gripped the Spanish colonies of East Florida and Yucatán during their transition to American rule. Land speculation, coerced labor, public and private militias, and international diplomacy by Indigenous states all play a role in this regional story. I hope that my project will offer one framework for considering Native American and Indigenous history beyond the borders of national colonial regimes.
