LSAIT Monthly Status Report - October 2013
Below is this month's status report for significant projects which LSA IT is leading or other Michigan IT initiatives that may be of interest to you. Feedback and questions are always welcome.
LSAIT Connections Conference - October 14 - Mark your calendar for this Monday. We will have sessions on a variety of topics related to IT research computing resources for faculty and students. There is no cost for participation. The sessions will take place in the Michigan Union and will also be streamed live for those that can’t attend in-person. Click for more information, the complete agenda, or to register. (Contacts: Nancy Herlocher, Erin Dietrich).
Flux / HPC 101 Training, October 16 1-5pm - Here's an opportunity for Flux cluster users and potential users to learn more about the Flux computing cluster, creating and submitting jobs, understanding the available tools, and avoiding common pitfalls. This will be a hands-on experience, in which you will log in to the cluster and work with jobs. The class will be Wed, September 16, from 1 - 5 PM in Room B743 East Hall. Click for full details or to register. We think graduate students will want to attend, and faculty and staff are welcome as well. (Contact: Charles Antonelli).
CI Days 2013 - November 13-14 - Registration is now open for Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Days 2013, a two-day conference aimed at highlighting data- and computation-intensive research and educating the U-M community about the advanced computational resources available on campus in a wide range of disciplines. The program includes keynotes by well-known figures in computational science, sessions on U-M resources, and a poster session for students with cash prizes. An agenda is available here.
LSA IT Infrastructure unavailable October 26-27 - LSA IT will be performing standard maintenance on LSA infrastructure services, which may be temporarily unavailable on Saturday, October 26th and Sunday, October 27th. Apart from routine patching and hardware decommissioning, we will be upgrading Sharepoint 2010 to service pack 2, rebuilding two license servers using MiServer, and upgrading Sassafras’ KeyReporter to the latest version (Contact: Marissa Green).
Staff transitions – As part of our continued efforts to rationalize and optimize IT staffing in ways that best serve LSA, the following changes took effect October 1: John Cross and Brad Sharp have transitioned from ISS to the LSA IT team located in MLB. LSA IT will now provide tier 2 support of classroom IT. Josh Tishhouse has transitioned from ISS to the LSA IT infrastructure team, including bringing with him responsibilities for behind-the-scenes classroom IT infrastructure. Jim Zajkowski has transitioned to MiWorkspace where he'll remain lead developer on Izzy and continue to provide tier 3 support to LSA and others. Effective November 1, Reid Paxton will also transition to manage a portion of the MiWorkspace effort, including helping ensure a smooth LSA transition to this service. Effective January 1, Rick Smoke will be transitioning from providing departmental support in Sociology to being part of the LSA IT desktop support team serving the LSA and nearby buildings, as well as continuing to provide application development support for Sociology in conjunction with MIS. As with any organizational change, continuity of quality service to users remains the top priority throughout these transitions (Contact: David Sweetman).
New and Updated Software Available – Since the previous update, we’ve released the following upgrades: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5, Deep Freeze 7.7 (Win) & 5.7 (Mac), Apple Final Cut Studio X.0.9, PaperCut NG 13, PyMol 1.6.0, and LabVIEW Fall 2013. Additionally, Scrivener is now available for Windows and Maple availability has been extended from LSA to the entire UmichITAM consortium. Maintenance contracts for the following existing titles in the portfolio were renewed: Apple Logic Studio, SigmaPlot, SPSS & Amos, Camtasia, NVivo, Mathcad, Parallels, PCTeX, Scientific WorkPlace, and PGI CDK. Click here for a complete list of all titles. (Contact: Crystal Borgman, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Network Infrastructure Replacement Project - ITS and LSA have started a project to upgrade outdated network infrastructure. Work will begin in November and complete in summer, 2014. In November, we will begin upgrading 37 switches in Angell, Haven, and Tisch buildings. During the switch upgrades, wired and wireless networks may be unavailable. To minimize the impact, we are planning maintenance windows during weekdays (5-7am) and on the weekends. As upgrade schedule is finalized, we will communicate directly with affected users. (Contact: Marissa Green, Bob Pelcher, Dave Hunt, email@example.com).
MiWorkspace LSA Planning Continues - As we continue pilot planning with Comm Studies, DMC, and other Dean’s Office areas, we have also begun to turn our attention to the larger migration of the rest of LSA next calendar year. We will be attending upcoming LKAG small group meetings to answer questions regarding this transition and to refine the timeline of when each department will transition. IT in LSA cohesive service management implementation continues - The project for the new ServiceLink tool continues. Preparations for next release, which covers Knowledge Management and Problem Management, are progressing well. IT Staff will have access to these applications on Friday, October 18 and training is now available. For more information about the ServiceLink project, visit the project site or read the FAQ. (Contact: Erin Dietrich, Reid Paxton).
Verizon capacity nearly doubled at the Big House - As part of continued campus-wide efforts to work with cell phone providers to enhance coverage on campus, Verizon’s capacity inside Michigan Stadium was recently nearly doubled, with additional upgrades also planned. (Contact: Andy Palms)
Local File Backup - Need free, unlimited backup storage for your workstation? We can help. Desktop backup is available to all LSA faculty and staff using Linux, Mac and Windows. This is only intended for cases where files need to be stored on the local workstation. If all your files are stored in M+Box, Google Drive, LSA shared network drives, or LSA research storage space, your data is already backed up and covered. (Contact: Marissa Green, Ryan Bankston, firstname.lastname@example.org).
Data Visualization Hub - We have a visualization hub available for use by any interested faculty or staff in the College of LSA. We will include further information at the LSAIT Connections Conference next week. (Contacts: Seth Meyer, Tim Rolston, email@example.com)
Big Data Pilot - Big Data is a popular term for large data sets of mixed structured and unstructured data. If you have unmet big data needs or interests, please contact us so we can help you explore the options (Contacts: Seth Meyer, Erin Dietrich).
Large Scale Research Storage Space - We continue to offer each faculty member 2TB storage at no cost to the faculty member or requesting department. Additional storage, greater than 2TB, can be purchased at a cost of $30/year. To request your free 2TB of storage, please fill out the request form here.
