Thought and Awe Blog
I am interested in the evolutionary origins of nodulation, the mutualistic symbiosis that some plants make at their roots with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Nodulation evolved multiple times independently, each time drawing on a pre-existing pathway used to form mycorrhizal associations with fungi. I use a phylogenetic approach to reconstruct the evolutionary history of genes involved in nodulation to examine how this complex trait was reassembled multiple times in different lineages. I am also interested in science communication and public outreach.
