Joanne Leonard was an active member of the Women's Studies Program from 1978 when she arrived at University of Michigan until her retirement from teaching in 2009. Her publications in fine arts, feminist criticism and cultural analysis include her 2008 book Being In Pictures, An Intimate Photo Memoir with foreword by Lucy R. Lippard.
