  • About

Mary joined the German Studies doctoral program at the University of Michigan in fall 2013. She earned her B.A. in Political Science from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, in 2010, and spent the following year teaching English on a Fulbright grant in Germany. Mary went on to earn her M.A. in European Studies from Indiana University Bloomington, where she wrote a master's thesis on affect in the films of Fatih Akin.
Her current research interests revolve around German film history, melodrama and affect, critical theory, classical film theory, New German Cinema and the Berlin School, as well as questions of gender, race, and media. In addition to her work in the German Department, Mary is pursuing a graduate certificate in Screen Arts and Cultures and is a graduate student coordinator of Alamanya: Transnational German Studies Workshop.
