  • About

Catherine Carver joined the Advising Center in 2013.   An art historian, her research interests lie in the intersection of architecture, urban history, and the development of urban space.  She holds a B.A. from Duke University in History of Art/Medieval & Renaissance Studies and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.  In addition to her advising duties, she serves as a mentor for Michigan’s Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program.  Her publications include “Renovatio Reconsidered: Richard Krautheimer and the Iconography of Architecture” (2011) in Gesta, the Journal of the International Center of Medieval Art. Amongst her awards, she recently won an Italian Art Society Research and Publication Grant in support of her book project Urban Piety: Medieval Parish Architecture in Rome’s Tiber Bend, a project that investigates the development of Rome’s medieval urban landscape and the responses to and manipulation of medieval sites in the Early Modern and Modern eras.  She has been a recipient of the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome as well.  In her advising practice, she most enjoys helping students plan paths and trajectories of exploration and loves the moment her students make connections between their many paths and broader map of their individual journeys. She continues to teach history of art at Wayne State University and College Creative Studies, and this term she is focusing on Italian Renaissance and Baroque Architecture and History of Modern Design. In her not-so-spare time, she enjoys exploring food and music, watching operatic productions, freezing at hockey games, and reveling in the warmth of the field hockey field with her three children, and going on long runs with her mischievous German Shepherd.
